schroedinger's hard disk: my external HDD was dead and alive!

Yesterday, I'd brought my external drive to the office so my colleague can copy some files of mine. Little did I know that when I'd disconnected it from my PC at home, the electrical connection had gone a bit wonky. Plugging it into the machine at work, we realised it didn't work. Borrowing 2 USB cables from my department didn't work either.

Worried, I brought the device home. Alas, it was to no avail. Short on time, we'd return to office sans hard drive.

Returning home vexed the whole day from work + the impending decision to make another purchase for a new HDD, I gave it one more shot. Taking the drive out from the casing, I placed it in another machine. It worked!

So now, my next step would probably be to get another casing for this drive of mine. It was more of the data I had inside that made me upset. All 80GB of it. I'm not sure if I'd even want to buy the newer drives that can go up to 1TB! Imagine the pain if all the data in one of that is gone!

and she said yes...

On the 24th of December, 2008, at about 9pm that night, I'd made my proposal to rachel, to ask for her hand in marriage.

Despite the lack of fancy hotel reservation, nor a posh restaurant dinner, we had a simple lunch we'd made ourselves at home. And kudos to her patience for the past few weeks of waiting. I'd insisted to not reveal the "surprise" I had for her, all this while keeping her guessing. My clues were vague, but hints were a handful.

Dear, my MSN nick at work had for the past weeks been stating "you rearm my will", which... is in fact an anagram of "will you marry me" although I'm not expecting you to decipher it as I don't think anyone would be able to in a million years. LOL!

I'd made a mistake when I told her I was getting her some medication from the pharmacy near my home when in fact it was clearly stated on the box that it was purchased from Parkway Parade.

The namecard of the sales guy was left in my wallet, but you (fortunately) did not notice it when you were taking money out to pay for our takeaways.

I'd lied to you about having lunch with my parents while I was on leave. Clarence was at Parkway Parade on 2 occasions. First time to window-shop, and second to decide on making a purchase. Shan helped with some advice too.

xD

I hope to refer back to this blog post in years to come, while we joke about this memorable day. Now I just need to phrase it nicely to my parents...

Thirteenth Month in Java

*GEEK POST*

Okay this is totally irrelevant to anything these days, but I just want to point this out.

There is a term in Java where there is a month after December, termed Undecimber. Hence, the thirteenth month. For use with non-Gregorian calendars, apparently.

That is all.

word of the day: parvenu

watching a taiwanese tv drama show with very bad subtitles, i'm surprised i can actually learn anything new at all. but here i am, proven wrong.

the term "bao fa hu" (as in "exploded account" literally) is a literal translation of the french word parvenu.

hmm... food for thought... who'd knew you can learn something from this.

oh, and in case you were wondering what is this show we blazed through over the weekend... it's a very silly (but sad + touching) show that involves Rainie Yang, Pan Wei Bo, etc. it's titled Miss No Good.

here's the first episode just to pique your curiousity further! xD

although the craziness can make your hair stand on end at times, the cuteness level is just as high!

*ps: i know i'm suppose to be a guy and all, but what can i do? i've got a gf with infectious chirpiness that takes adorability to new heights. uh... did i just invented a new word?

Internet Explorer being too smart/stupid at the same time

*GEEK POST*

Okay, here's my head-scratcher of the day. My colleague was setting up some webpages for a demonstration by one of the bosses. Naturally, the easiest thing to do was loading real live pages from our server and saving it as HTML and making necessary adjustments as static pages.

The strange thing was one of the webpages refuses to cooperate. What happened was the main "index" page is linked to several sub-pages. All other pages work except for this one stubborn page. It simply REFUSES to open the page upon being clicked!

I'd tried creating new links in the page but even they couldn't be clicked. But the rest of the links were still WORKING fine! Arghhh!!!

I chipped in to help (I'm more adept with hardcore HTML, you see) and the problem was a real pain in the neck. The moment I got it figured out, it was hair-pull-screamingly stupid!

When Internet Explorer saved the webpage, it automatically included this at the second line:

<!-- saved from url=(0061)https://www.thewebsite.com/SomeStuff?keyThingy=valueThingy -->

THIS LINE, apparently was the root of all our headache!

Removing it immediately solved the issue of the webpage refusing to open on clicking.

Parkway Holdings axes 148 jobs, cuts management pay by 5-35%

Two colleagues from my department were asked to leave today. Rather unfortunate indeed. They were considered as "retrenched" though. Not "fired". This is pretty earth shaking news indeed. And not very good for the morale of everyone here.

Nokia E71 & E66 smartphones announced plus Video Demo | PHONE Magazine

Rachel has bought a new phone! The new E66. Yes, she's returned to Nokia after a long hiatus. Apparently she's turned sick and tired of PDA/touch-screen mobile phones, largely thanks to my old Dopod 838Pro haha...
