life caught up

i'd just realise one thing: my list of things that i'd always wanted to do isn't going to materialise easily anytime soon. it's not necessarily a bad thing i mean. just that i guess i've been procrastinating on all of them. or for some cases, i reckon i won't be able to achieve the task anyway and gave up before even trying. well yes i probably wouldn't want to try scratching up a dance track of my own that easily, but i suppose it should be just as fun drafting up a stop-motion animation right? well that's a yes-but. yes i can try, but it'll take me a while to figure a good plot/storyline for it to work. do you have dreams? i suppose most of us have had dreams since we were young but eventually we let go of our dreams as we get older. why exactly do we let them go, or do we really ever let go of those things at all? maybe there's always some things we've wanted to do but never really had the chance to. the circumstances we are in simply doesn't allow it probably... i might call this the human condition. or maybe simply the problem with growing up. as people age we rationalise our thoughts and filter away those wishes to be shelved in a dark corner. when then can these wishes come true? i suppose a very sad but true condition in the real world is that the person must be financially capable, with ample time to spare too. rare cases, don't you think? people who fall into this group are either retired millionaires, or young volunteers who are willing to give up their everything to chase their dreams. the rest of us mundane city dwellers just have to suck it up and continue with our lives.

just a moment of thoughts that flooded my mind, that. i know it's christmas but all the festive cheer seemed to edge on these lamenting ideas of mine.

*thanks for being there...*

Impossible world

this site gets trippy as you dig deeper. it's about impossible figures in the real world. interesting, but definitely will screw with your mind as you look at all the impossible figures they have on display!

rain rain rain rainie rain rainy rain

heard from my dad that it's going to rain (since yesterday) all the way till friday. i wouldn't say it's dampening/depressing though. just plain annoying and troublesome. because, when it rains,
  • car crawl at people's walking pace because of low visibility
  • people have to take long detours along their routes
  • people also walk at snail's pace because of the slipperiness and windiness of it all
  • snails... uh i guess they'd get washed away altogether
  • roads get flooded so practically everyone gets inconvenienced (less those driving SUVs i guess)
  • cars get stalled in waist high waters like they unknowingly jumped into a watery human deathtrap
i think i'm unfazed by the rain probably because of army. i recall back in the days when we had to stay out in the field, camping/huddling/digging trenches in the rain. in the dark somemore! i guess i've gotten used to being in the rain so much so heavy rains seem part and parcel. hey what can i say right? it's the weather. ahhh... sudden dreamy memories of myself with a bunch of the platoon mates out in the cold wet night, chipping in our extra hexamine fuel blocks into a pile and setting them on fire to get some warmth. lol you don't get to do that anywhere else easily you know!

it's raining too heavily!

ok small update. i figured (roughly from some website i googled) that the tortoise is a female, given that it sports a small crevass on its shell just below it's head. and it's belly doesn't appear too concave (males, for mounting during intercourse ;) to me.

anyway, the rain seems heavier than earlier on. a stretch of the upp paya lebar road was flooded at least a few (10+?) centimetres in depth. enough for my vehicle to slow down quite a bit at least. quite freaky, this kind of weather. you wouldn't want to be on the road unless you are like me =x i find it challenging but i'm not all that daunted.

i came home and seeing the torrential rain (maybe it's got something to do with the tremors we felt from the earlier quakes in neighbouring Indonesia. may the 4 souls rest in peace indeed. but i digressed. about the tortoise (as opposed to a turtle, because it seemed more land-loving, with columnar hind legs) we took in, i then decided to bring her indoors. it's warmer here at least. beats taking refuge under this wooden chair of ours with wide gaps inbetween the wooden planks for rain to pour through. i made her a temporary home using an opened-up shoebox (yes actually i do have plenty of boxes i keep... a closet karang guni man...) and a bit of old newspaper for bedding. hope she isn't too freaked out by all that has happened.

*don't worry about it honey...*

gosh!!!

i just went out into the heavy rain to pick up my sis and bro-in-law from the mrt station near my house. on my way back up my street, smack right in the middle of the road was a freaking tortoise! holy cow! it was the size of my head!!! my bro-in-law picked it up and we took it home with us. it's still raining quite heavily but at least the fella's out of harm's way. it's now wandering curiously (and probably totally freaked out by the sudden abduction) in our backyard where it's safe. i'll see what my parents want to handle it (can't tell if it's a he-toise or she-toise) come sunrise. omigosh it's like the size of my head. wonder if it belongs to any of my neighbours. but it'd be an amazing feat if it was, and managed to escape its quarters.

immagona go google up some facts about them tortoises now.

holy shit it's freaking huge!

Everybody say AWWWWs...

no idea still? ;)

if you'd interpreted correctly, AWS had just levelled out my mood to neutral with just a teensy bit on the plus side. It's a good motivator, but barely there when you find out that you are working on the tip of an iceberg.

so what the heck eh?

Look fwd to 2008 Lancer: +10
Look fwd to 2008: +20

yup, so if you think positively, seems everything's falling on the bright side so far does it not?

Straightline - First pics: 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer

oh yes!!! it's finally out!!! the all new MIT LANCER!!! and i dare say it looks sweet. somebody (i quote) commented somewhere online that it looks like a cross between a Mazda and a Lexus. i agree. and i hope it'll reach our shores real soon, given that it's meant to be the 2007 model! *rubs hands in glee*

OT

stormy weather ahead, frequent days of OT expected. many areas flooded with loopy work and the sky is filled with bugs waiting to be fixed. left work at 9pm just now and it seems a day or two of leave will be cancelled.

i was explaining my situation to rachel earlier on. my colleague and i, we're like building a house on a tight schedule now. we've been behind schedule for like 3 weeks already, but that's not all. we've been building the house while some fella keeps chiming in when we're almost reaching the roof.

"we're in need of another room to build in the house."

"this place needs to have a doorway for a door."

"that place needs ventilation, build a window there."

"you installed windows that open out? remove that, we want sliding windows."

"those nails aren't rusty, just paint them over and they look good as new!"

"i'm pretty sure this piece of wood isn't crawling with termites. it's been used in more than one house so just use it here."

"we use frying pans to shovel all our dirt, just continue using it here."

"don't move the sand here with the wheelbarrow. use the small box with lots of holes in it instead!"

bah... you get the idea.

been pulling a long face today at work, cursing and swearing under my own breath as i analysed the existing codes littered with bugs that needed fixing. i thought we were building a new module... but who knew we'd be fixing existing bugs as well. the bricks have a lot of tiny holes in them. yeah, probably very good for ventilation. i'll need all that extra air. excuse me while i strangle myself.

* Flight delayed: SQ-KEN_DOES_OT. Any inconvenience is regretted. Sorry :( *

-sigh-

work's aplenty in the office. we're kinda behind time on the current "project" we have at hand, and we're gonna be later still i believe. okay my boss doesn't quite seem to agree on my using that word but for now let's just say i think that it's quite apt to be termed a project.

my colleague and i - who do most of the work getting our hands dirty - have slightly different views in our style of working from the lead programmer. i should say, we're on a different wavelength. for me, i'm just trying to find a balance between their styles, because we simply can't find one single solution that will fit both scenarios. in my opinion of course. one has cost-effectiveness in mind while the other follows Java programming practices+practicality. let's not go too deep into that. at times, both would think themselves right, while i have my own ideas. so to compromise, i'd then try to blend my thoughts with their thinking. other times, i'd have just done what i was told. no biggy. sometimes it just takes too much energy+effort debating over the right course of action that it just doesn't seem worth the time to do so.

still, i wouldn't say that there's conflict. the roots of the beliefs for the few of us of course is to get things done right and soonest possible. everyone might want the rest to agree and follow in their ideals, but they all have good intentions nonetheless. i wouldn't say all this is political. us code monkeys don't have much of that.

i'm sure this will blow over once this project is completed.

Cafe del Mar * Singapore

goodness what's with december this year? seems everyone's rushing to open their clubbing doors by christmas.

TechNet Block Party!

Can you believe it? MS is holding this event at MoS' Smoove arena to put some spotlight on themselves. But wait a minute... does MoS open at 6.30pm, that early? I mean seriously... who parties before the sun goes down right? Oh well, guess it's an alternative side-stepping for MS to organise this...

xstream (note: extremely geeky post!)

i finally got something figured out at work. it's been making my head spin. amidst all that "other" operational work, i've been tasked for the past weeks to focus my energy more on something that's "bigger" in a sense. to make our lives easier (i seriously didn't see how it can) we decided to employ use of XStream and JSON to fit into our existing framework. it'd been fun. up till my figuring out of XStream's feature for doing .fromXML(java.lang.String) that is. i believe that for the past week or so, up till today, i'd been trying to figure out how that lib can convert a set of XML nicely into a neat and tidy Java object without me pulling (much of) my hair out. i've finally sorted that out today at least. and i'm rejoicing... briefly. now comes the real task of building up the rest of the app and rushing things out. we're already waaaaay behind schedule and the boss had (nicely) asked me not to go on leave this friday. so be it. let's just suck it up and move along now. these things are inevitable.

but heck it was really fun figuring out data-binding from JSP to a complex java object via XStream. i was thinking in way too deep and complex but surprisingly XStream was less complicated than i'd thought it was. so i had back up a bit, look at my codes while my colleague looked on (i'd asked for his help because i'd practically surrendered figuring out) without saying a word. and then that was when lightbulb in my head blew a fuse and got it sorted out. life's just plain strange like that. the answer always seem to show up when you are almost about to give up. XStream had simply require that i set an alias (not this Alias though!) for each of the children objects in my complex "parent" these other complex objects come under. and there i was thinking of using addImplicitCollection(java.lang.Class, java.lang.String) and whatnots. my jsp was being tweaked so much the codes seemed to grow longer in a neverending fashion.

fortunately, things sorted out and i'm happier now.

most programming project codenames have a pun in them, i realised. XStream, for example, was probably meant to be read as "extreme" in a sense... geeky projects tend to sound cool like this for some reason.

*for us... it's JAXME =x*

*puke*

that's how i felt like after going for run late last night, after what seemed like ages. i think the last i ran was in september or so. all that food i had earlier on felt the need to get out of my system either way. from above or below. fortunately they decided to go with the lower alternative *cough* so i got stuck on my throne for a bit instead of making a mess with regurgitation. so much for cooling down. i was so shag i didn't get much done with cooling my body down after the run. now my whole body is aching from it. acks!

ok now, about that food i ate. i was down at this place with rach and shan for the afternoon. it's in siglap and it's called the cheesecake cafe. they've got plenty of cheesy cakes and other tidbits. i think we ordered tons of too-much-for-3 but we did kinda finish everything thanks to *ahem* yours truly. their ambience is pretty neat, the 3Cs: cosy comfy and captivating. i got cosy with their chocolate cheese cake, corn chips and a chocolate cokefloat concoction. *cough* sorry couldn't resist all those C's in that sentence. the comfy couches carried us into a relaxed state of mind while their cute cupids at a ceramic fountain captivated us. *bwahahhaa ok enough of that, i've ran out of C words already...* so it was quite enjoyable. their service was pretty good too. maybe because there wasn't much of a crowd then.

as a personal review, i'd rate them 8 of 10 stars. one thing they lacked was probably proper parking (we parked in front of this tyre/car repair shop beside their shopfront) and although they'd gain brownie points for a nicely decorated washroom, it'd be good if they can increase the number (they only have one) of toilets in there. oh and their wings... tastes wonderful, if only the skin wasn't that tough/crispy to bite into. thus, 8/10.

lame adult joke

i heard on tv. damn kumar. lol...

what did cinderella do when she got to the ball?

she choked. =x

Wireless@SG Application Form

interesting. free wireless in singapore for the next 3 years. brought to you by singnet. and the vog of gs of course... pity i can't spell pap backwards... =x

the cushions look so nice! i think they might be handmade because they don't all fit in snugly into their compartments.

what's this, you ask? watch box desu~ my sweet rach got it for my christmas present. i suppose by now you probably realise how much of a sucker for watches i am. lol... she also got me a watch for my birthday (she claims >_<) as well! no comments on what i got for her tho ;)

*thanks hunny!!!*

ok so now the attention is put slightly more on the watches. quite frankly though, i haven't been taking good care of them much. a few of them have dead batteries and the yellow swatch at the bottom left has this small crack above 12. :(

side view. note that the focus here is actually on the box, other than the 12 watches, which are set in their individual little compartments each with their own little pillow cushions that they lovingly wrap around. =x

woohoo! the box fully laden!
