window repairs

~_~ my sis' room had a window that was kinda broken. ken to the rescue! with my parents, we had to take out the window from its frame, remove the hinge brackets (boy the drilling was tiring) and then rivet on the window back on to its frame. we lucked out when we discovered that some of the rivets we were using were steel alloy. the rivet machine we had was no good (could only handle aluminium rivets with that one) so we had to go borrow another machine from my dad's friend (all the way down town!) to get on with the task. that old friend was real nice! according to my dad, he actually didn't have any in stock, so apparently he'd borrowed the device from someone else! we got home and got on with the job. this device was rather remarkable compared to the other one darn it. it's on a retractable arm of sorts, like an accordion thingy, one pull and the rivet went in easy! ok enough of this advertising stuff lol... but it was fun (and really tiring, i'm exhausted!) to be doing this diy stuff with my parents.

as i headed to pick rach up from town (she was out with shan and mum earlier on) i was on the road when this red lotus pulled up alongside. it moved along, and behind it was a dark blue/purplish mercedes slk. that wasn't the end of it! moments after, a lamborghini murcielago pulled alongside! gosh i think these 3 cars came into town together! >_> all the rich people in singapore...

*thanks for the royce! xD*

the really bad case of a giddy spell

MC! i wasn't at work today. i'd been feeling light-headed these past days and decided to see the doctor for some medication to fix the situation. let's hope i won't have the same thing happening again in the office come tomorrow. i slept for most parts of the day. gotta catch up with my work i guess... -sigh-

ugh

been feeling giddy the whole day. like a major hangover from the weekend. without the alcohol. light-headed all the way. think i'll just head for bed asap. no idea why. maybe it's partly due to my waking up at 5.30am. why so early? my aircon switched itself off, cos i'd set the timer to go off an hour too early. of course i went back to bed. but i think it's already screwed up my rest.

stud night

muahahaha well *cough* probably not. *ahem* i was out on friday night, with a bunch of my army friends. long time no see, so it's good to catch up with them after such a long time. think the last i saw them was last year, before i flew off to aussie land when i sent one of them off to UK. but oh wait... and then there was the silent mob in june... bah but that was for barely a short while in camp. not a comfy place to catch up. so of course, the ridiculous thing about our meet-up was... well we had our dinner at sakae sushi. they had this new concept-kinda venue at the atrium@orchard, beside plaza singapura. they call it "dining @ sakae" or something to that effect. just another hype-ish restaurant name. we had 7 out of 8 guys in attendance. and we all managed to squeeze into one box seat, 3 in one row, 4 in the other.

we had our fill, and decided to go somewhere else to sit/chill/do some talking. no idea where. we made our way up orchard road. meridien hotel for pool? crowded. alley bar/emerald hill pubs? kinda crowded as well + not too comfy seats + noisy for talking. nydc @ heeren? uh... quite a queue. spinelli's? no seats for us 7 people. starbucks (where singtel shop used to be) was no good cos it wasn't very big either. needless to say, swensen was having a long queue. so darn. we gave up. so let's take the bus back down to PS, we'd thought. uh... nobody was going to flag the bus. wth right? lol... so we began walking back. i think i'm already kinda sweating by now. i'm still in my long sleeves and pants from work mind you.

enough of all that yakking. we finally settled down at a food court (of all places) that had AIRCON! i even met another friend of mine there. so the happy ending was, we got seated at the quiet spot to chat and all's well that ends well. i think they just arrowed me to do the next round of organising for a group meet.

holy poop!

this is bad. the stretch of road along paya lebar just got patched and re-routed. so now it's a freshly paved tarmac. worse of all is, it's all smooth and straight!!! it's terrible to resist the temptation of taming those high rev sensations along there you know!

meanwhile, back in the office, i feel this sensation that i'm hardly ever going to get my own work done. almost every time i decide to focus on the report i have to come up with, i end up being called to other "more critical" tasks to iron out. i'm appalled at how many times a day do i breath in deeply and smile at people as i am gripped with torment deep inside me. i see that's what they call tech support eh?

Protection from Adware, Spam, Viruses, Online Scams | McAfee SiteAdvisor

two thumbs up! McAfee seems to be edging back in on the fight for a piece of the online pie! they came up with this nifty system of bots that crawls the web for sites and gives them rating on how safe they are. i'd just downloaded their plugin for my firefox. they have one for Internet Explorer as well. i'd think it's a safe bet to install their plugin!

A Bite to Eat!

hungry? then you probably won't get any less hungry after eating this...

Formula One Racing comes to Singapore?

What are the chances? Nyah... It'd be quite a feat if the government decides to build a proper race track on our little island! w00t... but where could they possibly build it? Tuas might be an option. Oh heck how about that abandoned "old" horse racing track in Bukit Timah ever since the spectator sport shifted further up north to the Mandai/Bukit Batok area? It's being occupied by Giant or some other hypermarket. It seems that the space can be put to better use as yet another racing track eh? Of course it's going to need some reworking and a larger plot of the land.

Bah. Work's been a bit sucky of late. There's good and bad stuff. But that's life isn't it?

Have a nice day!

when you are sick...

sickness and all its misery enjoys company. just when i'd thought having a really bad dry coughing spell on me, who'd knew my mouth would have 3 ulcers revealing themselves! :( it's been a week and these 3 buggers (2 near my low lip to the left, 1 near the upper lip on the right) have been guarding my mouth like 3 "generals". they're healing soon, but in the meantime i'm still feeling their annoyance with me. my cough seems to be improving, less coughing. probably just need to finish up the cough medicine i'd gotten from seeing the doctor.

at work, just when i'd thought that the few major tasks i managed to clear away will allow me a bit more room to work on this report of mine, other stuff started filling their spaces. i'm trying to get things done as swiftly as humanly possible, without messing anything up (too seriously). we have this saying i quote from our "grandmaster" the lead programmer. here in my department, we're always "trying to chase after a train", on foot at least that's what i'd explicitly spell out. in case people start arguing that we can be chasing after the train on another train. but i digress. my point is, since the day i'd joined, i don't see us "upgrading" the system a lot, much less talk about moving on to another platform. in this case, they'd mention shifting to .Net with tons of hinderance. things just get in the way. what a headache.

*sorry to have made you suffer the past week :(*

darn msn

i'm still feeling screwy at work. other than that, i'm just slightly annoyed at the fact that we can't use msn at work any longer now. no matter. i'm using ebuddy currently at work. but i just ventured on to a site known as desproxy which seems like a good alternative to making my actual msn work. will try it out soon!

as for msn... i understand that it seemed nutty today. for me, msn was down since early evening. i was racking my brain when somebody mentioned something on irc. didn't work for me. so i went online to google something up. i found on the microsoft discussion group, a reference to a mess.be forum workaround. so i tried it and it worked for me. if you are in a similar situation maybe this will help. i'm just sharing info i found, so perhaps you can pay it forward by sharing this info with others you think may find it useful? :)

this workaround is specifically for windows platform. other platforms... well you can try to get this working... but kinda no point if you aren't on msn eh?

  1. make sure your msn messenger is not logged in (duh? lol)
  2. run notepad, and open this file (it /should/ be there) C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts (note that it does not have a file extension)
  3. go to the last line in the file and hit enter to make a new line.
  4. key in these 2 new lines in the file (note that that's a space/tab between the ip address and domain name):
    1. 65.54.239.80 messenger.hotmail.com
    2. 65.54.239.80 dp.msnmessenger.akadns.net
  5. save and close the file.
  6. now try and login to your msn account.
that's all there is to it. if it works, good. if it doesn't, sorry you'll have to try finding help elsewhere. the advise also suggests that you should remove it after about 2 days once you for example, remove those 2 lines from the file (and save it) and you can login normally again.

i've been somewhat sickly these past days. hope i'll get well soon. this sore throat is really irritating!

as recommended by shan. >_>

sick or not?

i couldn't decide. i felt sick today. but yet i don't. how indecisive can i get? even my body can't decide on its state. i can't say i felt all the sickly symptoms per se but i felt somewhat hot and cold, sweaty, wheezy, coughing, head kinda spinny... *cough* sickening *cough*

we'd a night out for lynn, along with yongqi yesterday (well technically it's now 3am in the morning of sunday so it really should be considered 2 days ago on friday night, but you the idea right?). we had dinner at Giraffe opposite the istana. lasagne's pretty good. well baked with slight crispy burnt cheese on the edges of the bowl. serving size was relatively large, and the creamy pasta bake filling of sorts was rich and sinful. ok enough description. they also have a bar with a see-through glass floor over a flowing water feature. that's on the ground floor. we had our dinner on the second floor, which overlooked the fountain water thingy across from the main gate of the istana, and the onlooking traffic coming from orchard road. and they have a cat. strayed in from the rain probably, but it sure knew how to find a place that had food. we then hopped over to this open pub along a stretch of restaurants at the indoor stadium, by the water. we didn't stay too long as the pre-birthday girl suggested for us to go elsewhere. mustafa was still crowded at midnight. but it was probably the only place to go where it was still opened, and had plenty of things to look around with.

ah ok that was about it. by the time i hit the sack i think i knocked out completely straightaway.

how much do you earn in a month?

if you are earning a four figure sum - preferably not reaching 9k, then thank you, for being one of us. i'll have you believe that there are tons more people out there that earn truck loads of money than T.T Durai does. and when you realise it's all over the place, i'm sure you'd do T.T as well.

let me review 2 scenarios i've gotten wind of recently.

to get the picture right, let me start by saying, this was heard from somebody i know personally, with enough maturity in my opinion to not be making up incredulous stories. according to this person, his cousin (who is in his thirties) earns about 25k a month. SGD mind you! i reckon the money really is in banking after all. according to this person, the cousin drives a ferrari, and owns several other cars. a car collector damn it! his dad gave him a car after he got his driving license. a mercedes benz! gawd i'm going green. commanding such a high salary, this person had also been buying lots of branded stuff, and according to the person i know, hardly wears the stuff he buys once before deciding he doesn't want them. and he'd ask his relatives (aka people like the one i know) when they go over to his (big) house, if they'd want the stuff. otherwise he's going to throw them away anyway. >_>

scenario 2 is a bit less dramatic. it seems to me that there are plentiful of job positions in the private industry (even more so in banking) that have signs of people commanding high salaries. the source... of which i can't mention much.

of course in their defense, these people probably have the expertise and experience to fulfil the requirements for their positions. they'd have the capability to lead of course. but looking at the pay figures... my jaw would hit the ground even if i were standing on the kitchen table (just a figure of speech). that is a really big truck load of money they earn. seriously, i'd think that for them to be able to achieve this is no mean feat. you'll need a good combination of luck, skills, talent, and even PR skills to get to the top. maybe a lot less scruples too i speculate. no matter. if they keep the economy moving, so be it. i'm just on the lower end of the economical food chain...

OMGWTFBBQ?

Sticky Issues: Sticky Issues: The Yellow Square is for Smoking

so we have plenty of yellow boxes in the city. i'll bet smokers can stand in the middle of traffic and claim they aren't wrong to be there for a quick puff. lol

some people's birthdays

ok so i was not around yesterday or something. i figured i'd slept close to 12 hours until mid-afternoon before grabbing something to eat. we had a chalet to attend in the evening. 2 of my friends were having a birthday party in changi. one that neither had supposed prior knowledge of. ok so i guess one of them guessed as much that something was up since a few days ago (he's soooo smart!) and besides, it was organised by his girlfriend. it'd been a while since i last saw that bunch of guys (the girls of our class hardly show up for gatherings haha) from poly so it's good to see them doing fine. 2 of them are civil servants and had bought their own cars a few years back. and another one of them has in his possession a very nice little #000000 card that makes me green with envy. xD

i must say, despite this weekend seemed to have been a lot of sleeping and socialising, i'd have to admit it's quite eventful. :)

*rendez-vous s'il vous plaît?*

does she look like Jamie Yeo in this shot? somebody in my office certainly thought so! ;)
