so busy it's surreal
i kinda signed on the dotted line to sell my soul. well technically i can't sell my soul but you get the picture. but hey who's complaining about converting from contract basis to perm eh? and i'm actually learning stuff about the true meaning of MVC and how to enforce it... and all those techie stuff that i shall spare you from reading.
i guess i finally am in the shoes of a person who actually can't stop thinking about work even after he's gone home. problem-solving is a task that can never end. that's the flaw with technology. i do believe this is in line with the motto of my ns unit. "towards perfection" they say, and to which the irony reflects immediately: "you mean you don't have any idea what you are doing do you?" which probably won't put us in positive light much, considering the tasks we have to uphold in army. of course, the other phrase i like to speak of often on my own would be
hrmm... i think it's in season for me to be in a ranting mood. can't... help... ranting... on... incessantly... must... rant... and... type... gahh!!!
*yabe yabe yabe!*

"no human is perfect, if someone is perfect, then that person probably isn't human"
which rings true to a certain extent. until you start to raise doubts on my phrase with examples of perfect people and so on. to each his own, i say.hrmm... i think it's in season for me to be in a ranting mood. can't... help... ranting... on... incessantly... must... rant... and... type... gahh!!!

off day
i took a break from work today. thanks to the general elections of course. so i managed to wake up somewhat later (biological clock still made me wake up before noon) and i lazed around for quite a bit for most parts of the day. and of course i finally managed to meet my rach during her lunchtime! xD
i can summarise today as laze-my-butt-at-home-till-it-falls-off day! xD
*yabe yabe yabe!*

and that's the end of another weekend
time flies when you aren't looking, really. i hope you enjoyed your weekend cos i think i didn't have enough of it still. i do believe i'd slept through most of my weekend, rather unfortunately. although i did spend time together with rach nevertheless. i reckon all that working through the past weeks had drained me a bit. so maybe this recharging over the weekend is a good thing after all. i'm sure i'll feel more refreshed when i get back to work on tuesday...
what's that? shouldn't it be monday, you ask? no, no, no i'd reply. because come tomorrow, i'd be taking my off. what off? how did that get into the schedule? thanks to the government and their election, and to my employers who decided we get a day off, that's what! the only gripe is that we have to take the day off within this month. or we won't get any. but hey who's complaining? i just need not show up for work tomorrow to fulfill this condition.
i'm seriously thinking am i turning so obscenely disgruntled on the roads. unruly drivers tick me off quite easily, especially those who simply butt in front of you abruptly without any warnings. and to those who park indiscriminately? i do imagine myself with a car that isn't scared of scratches, with plentiful armor plating, and ram these cars off the roads, or even simply crumpling them to make way for regular road-users. then they'd go like "Noooo!!! i was wrong to have parked the car here, i shall now go surrender to the police and tell them somebody turned my car into a pile of junk because i parked indiscriminately and i deserved it, please put me behind bars." or something along that line.
ok i think i'm going crazy over this. call it a pet peeve if you will, but i simply appreciate a little bit of courtesy. i'm sure other motorists appreciate what i do, if say, at a cross junction and they are waiting to turn right, right? and here i come in the opposite direction, but i'm actually turning right too. so i signal early ahead, and they'd see my signal and hence would think "ah there's no other cars coming straight on and this car is turning right so i can move on" and they'd just go.
every second counts on the road, and especially if it's late at night i'm sure everyone would want to get to their destination earlier. so please, advise the people around you who drive to be more considerate on the roads?
ok i'm done with my ranting. it's been a while since i ranted so don't complain that i complain too much. heh...
*if dandan is female... why does she hump xiaohui...? xD*

pet peeves
i think i can say the same for everyone, when i say that everyone has their own set of do's and don'ts while driving (besides everything else) and of those things, i believe the first item on my list would be to frigging SIGNAL EARLY! of late i've encountered countless hapless souls who don't even bother to signal. i seriously think that is THE most annoying thing i'd rank in my list of annoyances for my whole life ever! i'm disgusted by these people.
oh and hey... x-men: the last stand is pretty cool and worth every cent. the effects were neat enough to be part of the marvel franchise i'd say.
yay $!

headache headache
i would say i felt lazy at work today. can't say i'd been productive though i wasn't slacking around either. it's probably one of those average busy-but-not-busy days.
and you know what? i think i'm drinking too much water at work. please tell me it isn't so, anyone? i have practically 3 servings of 1.3L of water daily. that's 3.9L aka 8+ * 16oz glasses of water. so i'm having literally 8 glasses of water daily. should be a good thing right? but... the down side of all this? i pee loads, meaning i make more frequent trips to the gents than anyone in the office. i think i go at least once per hour if i drink the water. not quite so if i get busy and don't drink up. sekali i kena bladder problem. ho hum...
"on the third day 'fore payday my bosses sent to me, bladder's full a-bursting, messy staff data to clean, an offer to be perm staff, new module to program, reports to generate, changes to my Task A, new set of test cases, changes to requirements and loads of test cases to try..."

weekend != weekend?
friday came and went in a flash. i guess that for the past 2 weeks or more i'd been hard at work. and it seemed as though 8 hours a day at work isn't quite enough. there were still some stuff at work left to clear this coming week... can't blame anyone if the company is doing well with new contracts coming in right? heh...
oh and there's another piece of good news at work too... despite all that work, there's something i'm actually happy about. i'd just been told by my assistant manager that they'd decided to convert my contract into a permanent position! 嬉しい! xD and surprisingly this, barely 2 weeks shy of a full 3 months of my probation. it's definitely a good thing they are satisfied with my performance so far. will definitely continue working hard (don't worry, i'll work smart too of course) and see what else blossoms!
you could say i'm part slave-driver part self-torturing maniac. instead of lazing my weekend away, i was busy fixing up this site for my cousin. it's the new Coral Village Bistro site, and however unsightly a comment you wish to leave about it, i'll be happy to receive the constructive criticisms. it's actually the second version of the site already... the first one wasn't quite up to the expectations of my dear cousin /ahem/ and whatnot about having a rotating set of photos in it... ah... if they so wish... oh by the way, they do have a wonderful variety of food at the restaurant. from angmoh to asian to fusion foods, heck, to even coffee and cakes, they have it all! a few of my favourite dishes i have when i drop by there includes their 宫宝鸡丁, dough fritters with mayo and their sharks fin! =x
i figure working is very taxing on the body. been feeling so lethargic nowadays i can't wait to get home after work to just laze in front of the tube. but all that stoning is probably going to cause my fitness to go down. wonder when will that one day be that i'll be motivated enough to go jogging/exercise/whatever. i moved the exercise bicycle into my tv room already. but so far i'd only used it once. will have to work harder on that haha...
"on the seventh day 'fore payday my bosses sent to me, new module to program, reports to generate, changes to my Task A, new set of test cases, changes to requirements and loads of test cases to try..."
"on the eighth day 'fore payday my bosses sent to me, an offer to be perm staff, new module to program, reports to generate, changes to my Task A, new set of test cases, changes to requirements and loads of test cases to try..."

hmm... the song quite nice. the interesting bit is she's supposedly japanese, but she doesn't look half like jap at all. her japanese sounds flawless, but her english isn't half as bad either! just listen to it. lol...

business
gosh 8 hours a day in the office is indeed insufficient. it seemed as if the number of things i had to do never stopped piling up! >_<" i'm trying to clear as much as i can but some stuff just... waiting on others. lol zzz... and what's more, my colleague and i were rushing for some stuff to be ready by tomorrow morning so we stayed back a little later than usual. kinda like a continuation aka round 2 from last week. i feel so bushed this whole week! although it did feel shiok to be able to multi task (ok la just a bit...) with so many things to deal with all at once.
ok i'm whacked out.

i have this urge
no don't get me wrong! what i'm trying to say is i feel like i have a lot of things i still wish to learn/pick up/understand... i'd love to have a chance to learn these whole bunch of things in my head if i actually have the time to do so... oh yes i haven't been making lists for a while so here's one for starters.
i'd been ridiculously busy today. busy to the extent that i actually felt unproductive and decided to take toilet breaks every now and then. there were things i needed to clear but could not do because i was waiting on others, and then there were things i couldn't clear anyway because now isn't the time to do so, and lastly there's the things i CAN clear (which i already am working on) but BUT it's tedious and time consuming. ah heck... i'm still optimistic about it.
how can one know if he/she has fully utilised the day? you fall into deep slumber moments right after you lie down to rest yourself for the night. i'm sure i'll be doing that later.
"on the ninth day 'fore payday my bosses sent to me, changes to my Task A, new set of test cases, changes to requirements and loads of test cases to try..."
*i simply adore the inner child in you*
- learn Python scripting
- pick up vb.net for real
- produce a short animation movie
- mix my own music
- learn to use the turntable
- learn golf? *bwahahahaha*
- make my own pc casing *wink*

my dog type would probably be a german shepherd, which translates to being highly opinionated and thickheaded about my ideas, to the extent of past caring about how others think/feel about the matter.
i'm basically strong-willed and not easily swayed (hmm not really agree with this...) and that i'm passionate about my decisions such that i'd strive to complete my tasks. i can remain level-headed in a tense situation, such that i am able to display my leadership skills (yeah right) even though i'm constantly looking for ways to improve myself. i'm a positive thinker who looks to associate with people who are "good" generally. i don't give up easily, which isn't exactly a good thing if i get too focussed on my opinions and not listening to the advice of others. this makes me give up more easily if my way doesn't work at all so i am suppose to "chill" more.
i'm too lazy to translate about the people description. but i can summarise all that stuff i typed in as few words as possible:
- opinionated
- my way or the highway (well ok maybe not too extreme)
- passionate
- giving up is the last thing i'd ever want to do.
but here's mine... hehe... oh what's that? can't understand chinese? english translation after the original.

test cases galore!
yup. more of them.
we completed the first set and now we're looking at another set of more complex stuff.
my report generation seem to work ok, just needed a li'l tweaking.
oh did i mention? no wait i didn't. my parents rearranged the furni in my bedroom. geomancy. >_> good for my health, they claim. they read this article in the newspapers and decided that i was unhealthy enough for them to move my bed around. where was it placed originally? i have a bathroom connected, and there's a wall separating the bathroom and the front of my bed (aka where my head goes)... so they've rotated it 90 degrees clockwise and the bed is now beside the window, parallel to that wall i mentioned. it was mentioned in the article that it is bad for one's health to be sleeping with the head beside the bathroom. >_> -sigh-
"on the tenth day 'fore payday my bosses sent to me, new set of test cases, changes to requirements and loads of test cases to try..."
*i wouldn't leave my credit cards lying around... =x*

test cases test cases...
"on the eleventh day 'fore payday my bosses sent to me, changes to requirements and loads of test cases to try..."
it had been a good weekend, and now everyone i'm sure is back to work (or something routine), minus those filthy rich lads who do nothing whole day but enjoy themselves. i spent my day busily at work. it had been a good 3 hours plus after reaching the office before i realised that half a day at work was nearly gone and before you even know it, lunchtime is up. my colleague and i moaned about how short the day was... we didn't think we had enough time to do our stuff. fortunately, while we had to do our testing, we only encountered a small number of tweakings and bugs to fix. and with the codes i came up with, the structure to go through the test cases was rather well established (ahem even if i do say so myself... =x) so things went rather smoothly eventually, and we managed to get out of the office by 7-ish.
did i ever tell anyone about my dream house location/district? i'm sure i have... all those humongous houses up in bukit timah aka district 10... goodness... they are really gigantic. my dream would probably be something along that line. well hey don't shoot it down just yet k? it's just a dream. not like i'm gonna get to it in a snap. oh and the other thing, i'd want to really own it. where i live now, that's my parents. i'd love to pay for my dream house and get my parents to come over and live with me. and hopefully my significant other too xD *carries on dreaming...*
*soundproofing would be good...*

happy mother's day!
freaky how times flies. it's already close to half of the year over and it's mother's day already. i hope everyone had an enjoyable time with their families... with their loved ones or even their mummies for the least. my whole family visited Tao's for lunch (yes... again) all 8.5 of us... we had arranged to meet there by 2pm and i guess everything dragged till 4pm+++... so yes... we had a late lunch. there wasn't much to complain of for their service however. they were really friendly and chatty with us for some reason or another... we were even placed in the only enclosed room in their restaurant! >_> feels a bit privileged the moment we walked past those other people having their meals... could sense them looking in our direction wondering who the heck were we to be offered seats in the special room.
ah yes, so why were we taking so long with our lunch? my poor nephew had a stomachache. yes, that was it. half of it anyway. his parents were running late meeting us after his lesson elsewhere because he had to go to the little boy's room. on reaching, throughout the meal, i believe i counted him complaining of having to go at least 3-4 times. without any -cough- results. you could picture by now, his 2 anxious parents running back and forth to bring him to the bathroom. their lunch awaits them, soon to be left cold... their stomachs probably feeling hungrier if not for the previous course served in time. ah... the woes of parenting.
in other news, i'm feeling a tad broke after the family meal. i agreed to my sis on sharing the cost of the meal between us. i don't suppose it's back to bread soon... or i could just count down to 12 days.
"on the 12th day 'fore payday my bosses sent to me, loads of test cases to try..."
*...it was brought forward, but it was enjoyable...*

The Scarlet - A Boutique Hotel
this is an interesting place to stay i believe... these boutique hotels are supposedly worth five stars, and yet offer competitive rates. no i'm not exactly endorsing it but it does makes you wonder if the term "boutique" is a little too fanciful to be used? or is it just another word for chic-and-cheap, phrased in a classy manner? oh, and do take note of their doormen if you happen to pass by their lobby... makes like creepy vampires on halloween they do...

Combimouse - Combination Keyboard and Mouse
i don't even know what to make of this... i guess it's a good idea, but probably not suitable for everyone.
zzz
yea lazy day. thank goodness it's vesak day this friday. was working my butt off the whole week! i figure it's the latest i'd stayed back so far. feeling rather drained of late... must be work. i still have so many things left untouched/undone in my room/at home... ah well... i'm sure i'll have some time for that some day...

going into overtime
i can't say work has been hectic, but i'd been working a slight later than usual this week. today especially, i left my office at close to 9pm. i'm helping out in this project my colleague is working on, so i'm chipping in my parts where the fringe functionalities and she's focussing on her core tasks at hand. the tricky part of this collaboration is in our synchronisation of what we're working on. firstly, it's a bit rushed to come up with a versioning system (we're going to work on this for this week only), and moreover we are both not too familiar with any of these systems.
source control comes in a few flavours (CVS, SVN, SCCS and probably a host of variety more out there) that allows members of the programming group to checkout files to work on and checkin the files again once they are done. the convenience of these systems are in integrating changes by different people on the same files, and tracking such changes so that files can be rolled back to use older versions. the flipside is that people have to actually checkin/checkout files, so it's not exactly convenient to work on the same file at the same time... or something like that. and to think they were intending on applying such a system to the existing core application of our company.
so basically, we're on our own. and i reckon she's probably only just left the office not too long ago. she stayed till 11pm yesterday. tsk... makes me feel bad about not helping her all the way.
*just... all this work...*

it's tight
this week has one day less of the working week. so things at work are going to be a bit more packed. hoping not to stay overtime too much but i think it's a higher possibility that i will.
it seems that for now, task A has been forcibly shelved while we focus on something more critical at hand. and at least i'm done with another set of tasks for now. so this top priority task that i'd probably be doing overtime for is a pretty complicated little set of rules for our client. but anyway i'm just helping out my colleague, chipping in to work on the task together. she seems pretty stressed about it already so far. should i too? i'll deal with it in the morning.
meanwhile, do drop rach a msg when u have the time. she's bored stiff being under house arrest for what ails her. but at least she seems to be recovering by now.
mother's day is coming. this sunday right? what have you prepared for your mum? i'm expecting my siblings to be getting her a cake or something to eat as a family... lol... SOP for my family. we are the cheapo sort. my mum included. kidding lah... we brought her to the ulu-ated restaurant on labour day remember? heh...

it's official
the poll was a non-walkover walkover. everything remains status quo, with the exception of the fact that we now know more people are on the opposition side. but just not enough to get things moving. so we'll wait for another erh... what? five years or so? maybe then it'll be 50-50, a tie for a change! wow won't that be exciting?
in other news, i was tidying up my army stuff to prepare for reservist. and i nearly didn't manage to dig up my sbo+helmet. hidden in some obscure corner of the house they were. everything so... old... they aren't too dusty cos i had everything in zip-locks. but my foot powder bottle had everything else in the same bag as it covered in talcum. and i was basically going through everything to keep things in order.
the weather is turning hot isn't it? it seems the days get warmer with each passing moment now...
*shiok! =x*

i'm glad i took the train
work has been hectic. manageable, but loads of it.
after leaving the office just this evening, i took the train back to my stop 2 stations away. stepping off the platform initially, i noticed that the crowd was bigger than usual. there were more people standing around here and there. i also noticed a sign that points people in the right direction to the stadium nearby. hmm... "what could it be?" i wondered. getting myself on to ground level, i saw that the number of people above ground was greater than normal! ah ok, so i concluded that it must be the elections. all these people alighted here just to walk over to the serangoon stadium just about 5mins' walk away to hear what one of the opposition parties had to say during their rally speech. well ok, i'll just get on with my own stuff, heading home.
and boy did i feel glad to not have driven to work this morning! what i saw along the main road was just horrible! the jam was really long there. as i walked along the pavement i noticed the cars were hardly moving. hehe i was thinking to myself, how would my brother react when he reaches the entrance to our street and realises that he still has to wait around a while before being able to get home. from what he mentioned after getting through the ordeal, he took 5minutes. just for that last stretch.
even after coming into the small street of ours, i realised that the rally speech also caused the street to have plenty of uninvited guests. a whole bunch of cars were parked wherever there was space. in our little street. and all the time we were having dinner, we could see the headlight reflections of numerous cars, all streaming in trying and hoping to find a parking lot, or were being misled to think this road is a shortcut that leads to the other side. even the hdb parking lot that was usually not very crowded was practically fully occupied.
i think my whole family was just amazed at this sudden flock of people.
so i guess i made the right choice in taking the bus to work this morning...

rush to wait, wait to rush...
work work work work work work work work work. wait for input from other people. work work work work work work work work work. wait. work work work work work work.
that's work for ya...
my AM (asst manager) was interviewing for a bit today, after our fortnightly meeting. he was asking how i was getting along so far and stuff. things were going pretty well, and to top it off, he was hinting that he'd be considering converting me to permanent staff after my confirmation... i probably won't hold my breath about it, but it'd be good to get better benefits as perm staff. there's even suggestion i might get paid more, but i'll just let it hang and see how things go.

chicky pox
rach has chicken pox. no, she hasn't contracted it before. and yes, i already had my fair share during my primary school days. the doctor had given her 2 weeks' medical leave for it. call it shiok, but i think it's still kinda tough. her work is calling for her and i figure it'd pile up real quick. on top of that, her bosses had banned her from work. tsk.
can't imagine if i were to get something (*touchwood choy choy pui*) that requires me to stay at home. i'd have to work from home and access my office pc from here. it's not a bad thing to be able to do that, but the environment is different.
i'd heard from my colleagues who are already married with kids, that they feel better off working in the office, away from their kids. so understandably, they would probably find it exceedingly challenging to work from home. kids noisy, looking for attention, other distractions etc... makes you wonder what's with all that hype few years back that companies had on promoting SOHO/telecommuting. i'm not sure if people are still into this method of working, but personally i'd probably find it easier to work in a regular office environment. of course not every job can be done that way. but working from home would deprive myself (in my opinion) of a chance to get away from work, just for the day, so i can rest my body and take my mind off work. my dear friends ter and jason are probably more resilient than me in this sense. they'd been at it (working from home and stuff) for all this while since i was back from australia.

happy labour day!
and boy did i labour!
i'll post the pics up another day, but today, i headed out with my family for a little excursion. it was all out: my parents, my brother and family, my sis and brother-in-law, myself and even our maid (pity rachel was feverish so she didn't join in). where to? we went all the way up north to the sungei buloh wetland reserve, aka the lim chu kang farm area! goodness it was far. as we navigated past the abandoned railway, past the kranji dam, and negotiating the winding roads that is lim chu kang, we found a few neat little spots. first stop was a veg farm that we'd came across. it was pretty big, but i must admit it wasn't very fantastic for a farm. their crops were as if for display only.
we then headed to the wetland reserve. costing us $1 per adult each, and $0.50 for my little nephew, we took a stroll in the nature reserve. it was expectedly warm n humid. we were pretty much sweating, all of us. but we did spot a few monitor lizards, crocs, birds and i suppose everyone did enjoy themselves. we figure we barely walked one fifth of the whole location! the place was huge! we then found ourselves a bistro to have our lunch in. they were pretty packed, considering the location was in the middle of lim chu kang. but i guess it's because of the public holiday. we had to wait over half an hour for our food... >_> and it was warm. luckily the wind was around. and their kranji fish and chips were pretty alright. my family had ordered a few nasi lemak too, but they had to replace the fried egg which had ran out, with another chicken wing.
the trip was rather enjoyable albeit all of us being warm and sweaty. and guess what? we didn't encounter a single mosquito throughout! so amazing, singapore. all the way into the farmlands and we didn't get bitten. proves how clean this little island is. lol...

interestingly, i dug up this blog. i do feel somewhat skeptical still, but apparently it's a blog by the CEO of NTUC Income... go figure.
