i'd been having a bit of a problem with my hp multi-function centre printer (printer courtesy of my rachie xD ) interfacing with my desktop (it works fine with my laptop!) so i haven't been able to properly get things printed from my desktop thus far. i just managed to find the cause of my problem so i thought i should just log it here as a bit of a reference for myself in future, or otherwise anyone else who may come across this problem. i couldn't really find any indications of this problem anywhere else online even with the help of google.

ok so my fix is very simple. under the list of ports for the printer (right clicking on the printer in winxp followed by the Properties selection brings up this list in the 3rd tab)

see that DOT4_001? i have that and the USB001 (Virtual printer port for USB) checked. so i randomly decided to uncheck that DOT4_001 just to see what happens.

i then tried printing a test page (it'd fail usually) and lo and behold, it worked!

to think the obvious solution was staring me in the face and i couldn't figure it out for so long! (close to 3 months!)
